[Though her landlady did have swords, she also wasn't too fond of Monsters. She hadn't stabbed Kaede yet, but Kaede didn't feel like resetting that counter today by trying to borrow those.
[So, a stick. There were quite a lot of sticks. But as Kaede found out, a lot weren't very good for her purposes. The easiest to get at were too flimsy or too bendy, larger branches less so but higher up. Having hands equipped with their own crampons helped climbing up to those branches, but just...tearing one of those off a tree seemed wasteful.
Kaede spent a lot of the time meandering down the path picking up and discarding sticks. Too fragile, to small, she got sick of plucking the leaves off that one...oh! There was an unattended rake leaned up against a fence along the road. That would do nicely. And there wasn't anyone around to claim it or protest. So down the road Kaede went, in a much better mood, newly liberated rake in hand.
The directions weren't entirely clear which cottage she was looking for.
But there were only so many pink haired Chimeras wandering around with a stolen(?) rake.]
[ eren doesn’t stay in one place either, as he leaves his burrow and walks around the perimeter. it’s . . . easier to spot a change, a shift in what the summer breeze brings in the form of an invading scent (eren tastes and smells at the same time, pulling particles with his tongue and pressing them up to the roof of his mouth).
new thing. he doesn’t think to do it, but the result is a phenomenal awareness of what’s around him.
which is why he doesn’t seem to take long to find her, attaching the smell to a girl— her changes have crept along, as his did, but his attention is soon passing directly onto the rake in her hand rather than the branching horns on her head. ]
[Movement caught her attention first; Kaede's gaze darted toward the humanoid silhouette approaching, relaxing somewhat when she saw a familiar face attached to it. She stopped, letting Eren approach.
Then Kaede huffs at his question. Don't judge her stick!!]
It's the best one I found. Can always cut it down later.
[ that’s . . . hold on that’s not a staff, it’s a . . . really weird broom? a torture device. ]
. . . I think we can use it like that too, if you want. [ he can pretend it’s a rifle or something— although a shorter end would be needed to knife practice. ] Over here— we’ll use an open spot.
[A torture device for dead leaves and grass clippings]
Not too close to the road.
[Kaede hadn't seen anyone else out here, but her paranoia said they were there even if the other cottages hadn't given that away. She didn't like witnesses.
The chimera hefted the rake again; it felt light as plastic in her hands, not like wood.]
[ there’s enough space near the yards, and besides that— he much prefers the grass and solitude for this rather than staring eyes and people passing by with their carriages and what not. liberty! and that’s where he leads them, to a cottage he seems fairly comfortable with opening the gates to, holding it open and closing it behind them.
once that’s done, eren relaxes his shoulders, shakes his arms, and bounces some on his toes. ]
You can attack first— we’ll switch when you’re ready to try.
[Kaede followed him, glancing idly to the side at the distant chirp of a bird or a grasshopper jumping nearby. By the time they reached a cottage Eren seemed to know, she was starting to feel a little antsy. She didn't warm up or stretch (mistake number one), but did roll forwards onto the pads of her feet where she felt more comfortable.
Kaede nodded--barely, it was mostly the motion of her antlers that gave it away at all--and without any further fanfare, raised the rake to take a swing at him.
She is projecting her movements hilariously obviously. She has a good sense for range already, just not keeping her shoulders still.]
[ ah, that’s right. now he remembers why he hates these things.
they force you to fall back and keep your distance— close combat was all the more difficult. to eren’s luck, she seems to go through the movements that are more easily accessible to her, and that alone gives plenty of openings. It isn’t a problem, on the bright side. that’s not his focus. ]
If someone’s using— [ a glide sideways, to avoid the swing, ] long weapons, they’re going to try to, ghh, keep you away. [ a gesture to what they’re both doing; a fair example. but he gestures for her to come at him again. ]
There’s something better than a spear, or a knife.
[She missed that time--which she expected. This thing didn't seem that heavy when she was just holding it, but now that she was swinging the rake around it seemed heavy and unwieldy and slow. A significant downgrade for someone used to a weapon as fast as a passing thought.
The rake dug into the dirt, and Kaede quickly dragged it back for another swing.]
[ eren would run into the next stroke, arm first to defend his skull, but pulling significantly closer to her body’s stance. if she’d allow him, the way to get there could be quick, raising the back of his fist to her face. one’s first instinct is to move away from it, and if she does, he’ll move with her. ]
You.
[ he wants her to punch him, or at least try to. It’ll make more sense once they’re on the ground. ]
[Kaede started to lean away when Eren stepped close to her--and then jerked back further when his fist sailed towards her face.
There were a lot of things Kaede had subconsciously relied on her vectors to correct. Her posture, propping up her balance. There's nothing to catch her this time--one hand left the rake handle, but was far too slow to catch her in time. Down to the ground they both went.]
[ eren’s arm hooks for her other in the quick tumble, attempting to get a better grip in with another invading arm that would press her into an arm triangle, if all successful. there’s still the struggle to maintain an upper hand, but handled well, a squeeze originating from the space between his neck and her own arm could threaten to choke her.
eren wasn’t annie, though, as much as he was fond of her. It wouldn’t last and he wouldn’t suffocate her— just enough to show her that there was a way. ]
You can do just about anything with your limbs, if you get close enough. [ ] Size doesn’t matter— someone could be physically stronger than you, and you can still take them down.

I can find a stick anywhere.

They'd be too big for her anyway.]
