[ Eren, on the other hand, rolls up with the glory car two, borderlining three minutes afterwards in a speedy and abrupt stop when he curves into a free parking space. Fort McCoy allowed for those out hours after duties as long as curfew was met, and he's grateful. Throwing the door shut and meeting Dave halfway, he waves back— his puffy dark hair gone and trimmed down to the scalp, uniform and boots. He's close to being the airman he always blabbers about.
The wave turns into an anxious sort of head rub, complete with a huff and a shake of his car keys against his fingers. ]
The biggest cheeseburger possible. [ Back pat!!! ]
As usual. Shared basket of fries? Anyway, let's get in and like...you can just ask whatever you want. I could try to outline it, but I dunno what all you actually managed to absorb from the network so far?
[ He prefers the same place as always— the corner that has less movement than anywhere else in the restaurant. It's nearly hidden, but more than enough to just kind of take them in and become their bunk of deep thinking. He used to only think about the Air Force to motivate him, to move and do things. Now this goddamn mess is all he could think of, and it might be that way until fixed (when, huh?).
He puts the menu aside as soon as it's handed and waves off the drink order, impatient and antsy to get straight to it. Deep breath in. ]
So— there were monsters through all of August. Half of the app using population got sucked into a reality rip and disappeared, the other half stayed outside to solve problems and get them back. One casualty I know of. [ His arms fold tightly into each other; another deep breath through the nose. ] I was aware for a day on the 17th, only remembered that all today, so. Two weeks of limbo. I remember running into one of them, so I know they're real.
[ Uh, he murmurs, pinching the bridge of his nose. ]
We're supposed to get memories. Real memories from— a past life or alternate world or, [ He waves his hand. It's overwhelming. ] something. Retrospec and its employees are damn ghosts, and this is all far from over.
Yeah, memories. From a real life we had - got that confirmed last month. I...have a lot of memories, can confirm they are a thing that happens, can confirm you get other shit. Physical changes, powers, items... [ he taps his shades. ]
Also, not totally sure what went on in the city in August - I was in the portion of the population that disappeared. [ probably eren remembers forgetting about dave for most of august, and dave just...mysteriously not showing up to meetings but who cared since he Didn't Exist to NPCs? ]
[ Come to think about it, there was a blank of sorts in August, a blip of memory that was just. Blank. No horses, no Dave, no other people he knew that disappeared– Eren rubs his mouth, quiet and troubled with the sensation that he was somehow tampered with to not notice. It bugs him like a wolf finally figuring out it's been in a massive cage this whole time. ]
Glad you're okay. [ Eren raises from his half slump to lean forward, elbows against the table. ] They're like— past lives? Like reincarnation?
[ He's only ever joked about it— so-and/so is totally rocky reincarnated. Never really imagined it as an actual possibility, Eren always ran on the yolo button. ]
Uh...kinda. [ dave makes a so-so gesture with his hand. ] Last month the people I was with were up in space, right? We learned it's more like..."reconstruction". This shit was always ours, and it's just information that's being brought forth, or something? Is how it was put.
[ so it's kind of reincarnation and kind of not? his feelings on this change like daily. ]
[ Eren looks more than flabbergasted, but he's trying to understand, truly. Or make sense of it in his own way somehow. If they're memories that have always been there's . . . Wouldn't that mean that they aren't who they think they are? But they have lives, they were real. ]
So they've always been ours and we're getting it back. [ Eren doesn't like to make things more difficult— a lot of things don't make sense, but it's not like he's going to search for the most fluid, perfect answer to every question either. Something had to make sense for him now, else he'd probably blow his top again. For now, he sticks with the first thing: ] We have alternate lives in alternate places, and they want us to remember.
[ But then comes the parts that grinds on him more than the regain aspect. ]
Just so Retrospec can have us to clean up their garbage?
I'm not sure if that's their goal...or if they have one. From what I've been able to piece together from everyone else's bullshit last month, it sounds like the only goal we can confirm is...rebuilding worlds that were dyin', or died, or something? They'd never asked us for help of any sort before the monsters last month, which I was surprised they even bothered to do when I got back.
[ dave frowns, uncertain. he prefers to have some kind of idea as to what's going on, but... ]
...Honestly, I have to wonder what the end goal is here. It has to be somethin' other than trolling us, though.
Rebuilding dying worlds . . . Our— alternate worlds? [ Rubbing his face anxiously, he runs his palm across his buzzcut and to his neck again, leg bouncing while he tries to assimilate in a way he could understand. This sounds like something from Star Journey, he mutters. So somewhere far away, in a world he's somehow connected to, it's . . . Dying, or already dead. Him and all the people he can imagine on it.
It suddenly makes his stomach flip with discomfort. ]
Maybe the help wasn't needed until it got out of hand. [ But he's still rather miffed with the idea of being used as a pawn, or something. Played with, even more so. Sometimes it felt like it, and shit . . . Sometimes it didn't. ] What do you know about your memories?
Uh...a lot, actually? I figure I'm still the person who remembers the most overall, unless someone else beat me and just doesn't talk about it, which is always possible.
[ a shrug, casual, like it isn't a thing that's fucked him up. ]
I'm well over a hundred memories or somethin'. I know the shape of my life and lots of little pieces. But I'm still gettin' shit back and filling in the blanks. I...know enough to recognize some people from the same "world" as me, even.
