[Yeah Elliot isn't about to argue that it shouldn't have happened in the first place, or that the girl was clearly mental. Who throws axes at people who are just getting fresh air? And then proceeds to try to use them for further target practice? But Elliot knows better than to go into too much detail there. It might make Eren rethink wherever they are going now and hunting down that girl instead. ]
Yeah, he stopped her before it got worse. He was really mad.
[ Eren prefers to think that it wouldn't have even gone anywhere with him around, which makes his absent loathsome, but look who's talking; car beat, so is his face, and she's still walking around.
He gave her his own stern hi, my name is eren jaeger, but more is never enough. At least, with more mention of Dante, he was slowly easing off. (Didn't mean that he wasn't planning any potential remeets, though, hah, preposterous, what're you talking about . . . ).
Where are they going, by the way? Making my way downtown, making turns . . . ]
It's not your fault. I didn't tell you I was going in the first place.
[You stop that self-blame train right now Eren Jaeger. Elliot glances out the window - but honestly he's still so new to this town he doesn't have the slightest idea where they are. Things seem so different when you're in a car and not walking or taking public transportation.]
Just hit me in the chest. The bruise is almost gone, really.
[ Wetting his lips and sealing them tight, Eren— has to breathe. He's already in a mood he hadn't expected to be in, but. At another light, he slumps, turning his head to face Elliot again.
He didn't . . . Want to be upset today. He's had enough upsets. This one was warranted, but. ]
Same, [ He finally says, tapping his cheek, although it's not that healed . . . But a boy can dream. ] Don't worry about it. Someone like that's got what's coming.
[Since that's definitely someone that's heading to get arrested one day, as far as Elliot could tell. But while Eren's looking at him, he'll offer a small smile]
But enough about her, okay? I'd rather spend my evening enjoying it with you.
[ Well, would you look at that. All it took was an extra minute to look at that before Eren actually gets beeped at. Light is green, light means go, right, he's going! The view of his infamous reddening ears are right there for you to see, humming something of a growl that gets betrayed by his lips, small as the quirk up was from frowning. ]
Right— almost there.
[ Eren stays a little quiet from that small stretch on, but it's nothing too bad. Maybe just trying to compose himself and remember why he was actually here, doing this. Right, it was to spend a good evening with Elliot, do something nice and quiet— no cat cafés, but something . . . Perhaps a little more Eren. Driving to one last light that he actively attempts to get in front of the line for . . . The road stretches for a while. That's a massive straight.
And in all that silence, Eren seems to be playing with the exhaust just a little. Vroom. Vroom. She's still as agressive as he is, look at those snarls. Is this safe? That might be questionable, but Eren seems to know the limits. ]
[It doesn't connect why Eren looked at him so long he nearly missed the green light, but at least he's willing to get off the subject of that girl. The beeping and Eren's growl makes him give a small amused sound in response.
As Eren drives, Elliot will settle back into his seat and go back to looking out the window, watching things pass by the window. For how cautious Elliot can be about stuff, Eren playing around with the exhaust? Doesn't seem to bother him at all. In fact there's something of a small grin on his face while he does it.
But yeah probably good call about the cat cafes. Elliot only really knows that place because his roommate and brother. Probably not the people Eren wants to run into tonight. ]
[ You really should hold on, then. Eren's attention is at the light now, only waiting, waiting, waiting, adjusting his grip on the wheel and flicking the music up just a peg higher—until the minute green flashes.
He told you!! He'd take you speeding!! The car's motor roars as he steps on it, asking for everything the gear can give him until he switches. They sure went from 0 to 80 in seconds flat, and it only keeps climbing.
[And they're off! Elliot's hand immediately goes to hang onto the dashboard as Eren starts to speed up. Faster and faster they go. The grin on Elliot's face only grows from the adrenaline rush and he lets out a happy laugh]
Woo!
[Also don't mind him as he reaches over and turns the music up even louder. STUFF LIKE THIS REQUIRES LOUD MUSIC OKAY]
[ Speeding cars, adrenaline rushes and very good music— Elliot's reaction only makes him grin as he takes them up to 110, 120, 140-! Nyoom! Where he has to slow down for the turn up ahead soon, he does, letting off on acceleration and lightly tapping the breaks. The car no longer roars, but she grumbles as Eren rides the rest of the momentum like a wave losing power, but it was good, very good while it lasted.
Well, onto part two. He chuckles to himself, exchanging quick glances as their speed normalizes, and easing back into his seat as well. Nothing gets your chest pounding quite like that, and he's more than happy to see that there was mutual enjoyment to it (imagine if he freaked out, ack). ]
[Elliot's heart is pounding from the speeds. As the speed normalizes, his hand goes over his chest. There's a huge smile on his face. Man, what a rush. ]
[ But now that they're slowing down and on their way to somewhere (where) with less of a technological gleam (less buildings, a little more road), Eren adjusts himself back into his seat. His heart's pounding, but now that he thinks of what exactly he's trying to do here . . . It's not easing up. It's dipping into his stomach.
[So much better than studying for law class. He notes the lessening urban area. He stares a little more out the window, he grew up surrounded by dense urban areas after all]
[ What's with that thanks—! He shakes his head to it, but really: he's glad.
Anyway, it might be too dark (and partially creepy) to go into the woods at this hour, but Eren figures he could just stop around by it. He wasn't purposely thinking towards anything romantic (what that), but a place that's quiet, nice, and private. Anxiety was already rocketing with the thought of it being just the two of them, imagine with extra eyes.
The car slows to a stop as he pulls up on one of his favorite hills to start a hike. It's got a view of Recollé shining farther out, tons of lights— but the best view was probably above them, where the sky was brighter than it really made out to be at night. The stars are crazy, and the moon is the natural light it's supposed to be. Pulling the safety break and turning the car off, ready to click his door open. ]
The place I told you about. [ He gestures outside. ] Best spot is the hood.
[He wasn't sure the destination Eren was planning on. Maybe a gas station to refuel, or somewhere to eat. He hadn't been expecting him to stop on a hill in such a scenic spot. He stares with wide eyes as he takes in the scenery]
Whoa...
[He immediately gets out of the car, completely stunned at the view around him. The city skyline, the moon, the stars -- this is the sort of scene you see in a movie, or on a pretty picture. But to see it with his own eyes....]
It's beautiful...
[He'll move to sit on the hood of the car, taking in the entire view. He almost wishes he had brought a notebook, so he could start composing right here and now. But he stops himself, it was important to live in the moment]
[ The ultimate symbol of freedom: the sky (and it even comes in flavors). Eren watches where he stands at first, hands in his pockets as he starts trekking toward the hood once Elliot's already there. Honestly, he's a little relieved it's getting positivity— he's pretty sure it's something of a rare spot these days, but even then? Something told him Elliot would've liked something like that, thinking back on inspiration.
Stretching his legs forward and leaning back, the airman gives a look up as well, a view he's seen many times and never gets tired of it. ]
And it's always there, [ The sky, the stars, this huge ass canvas and the fresh scent of nature untampered, the way it's meant to be seen, at least, the way he likes to see it. Even the crickets here are so much louder, chirps of bats and clicks of other nocturnal things humming around them. ] most people just don't know how to see it.
Hehe, yeah. You can't see it back in New York. Not like this.
[Following Eren's lead, he'll lean back to help get a better view of the sky. It was mesmerizing. So many stars twinkled in the sky- way more than he'd ever see back home. These are the same stars that inspired countless musicians, countless artists. With a view like this, it was easy to see why. ]
[ You got him there, actually. He never really had interest to look any up, he just watched them all as a whole and marveled. There was what he remembered from primary school, so . . . ]
[ Slack must be given! The only thing he knows about looking at the sky is probably what time it is. In military hours. Any reprogramming would probably take an extra lifetime.
It's all in good meaning at least, even he knows that, despite a shrug. Now comes the hard question, getting Eren to inhale and hold it in as he waited for the words to come. ] ]
It— [ He turns his head as well, but finds himself stunned and what's in his gut wants to ascend to his chest. Boy, here it comes. Cold feet wants to rear its head right in here. He sees those eyes, that face, and a flurry of emotions want to tell him what to do all at the same time. You're doing this. ] You.
[ And at that moment, he wished he had actually thought before saying something so unbelievably corny and unsubstantial. Haha, fuck. Coming on too strong, there. ]
I mean— We were talking about favorite places last time, so . . . [ He swallows, but in that gulp is a smile. ] I wanted to be the one to show you.
[Eren seems...really nervous. Like there was something on his mind that he was struggling to approach. Elliot knew that Eren wasn't the best at showing some emotions. Everyone knew he was aggressive and stubborn, but Elliot knew there could be a shyness to him at times.
The problem was, he couldn't quite figure out why Eren was showing that shyness right now. Elliot was observant, but like Franklin had pointed out to him- he had a massive blindspot when it came to himself.]
Me?
[He listens to the rest of the explanation. That's right. They did talk about that...]
I remember that... [He almost mentions that he has good timing, that Hikari offered to take him stargazing. But for some reason he stops himself- he felt weird bringing up another guy right now] Well, I'm happy to be here. But is this because you feel bad for not answering my texts?
N— [ No, quick head shaking. ] N-no, it's not that. I wanted to, tell you . . .
[ Heart beating wild now, any and all known nature sounds are completely drowning in the thump in his ears. He knew he had to do something, else he'd keep beating around the bush, or give the wrong idea. Every time something along the lines of I wanted to tell you that bubbled up, it wouldn't come out. It's a first time. There were obvious human feelings that were bound to happen, and he doesn't quite know how to approach this one.
He has to assure himself— this isn't something he'd be doing with a normal friend, this isn't something he'd be feeling that would be for just friends. Eren held slightly different conduct around Elliot, an effort to kindness and protectiveness doubled. His hand is moving at snail's pace, but deep in there he knew he had to do something. His heart was screaming at him to do something, whether tell him through action or through words.
It's now or it's never, and Eren would never leave something hanging like that again, not after a first time. He has certainty. He has action. He had no other reason to hide himself. He's always been upfront, honest, to those around him and to himself; he follows that flicker in him that tells him to keep going, that it's alright. He dumps the entirety of his chances on the one that's giving him the most assurance: gut feeling! Either a suicide mission or a trip to success.
Before he knew it, his hand bumps into Elliot's, making his chest surge, and instead of pulling back he stops himself, carefully. No sudden movements, no spooks, that wasn't an accident. His fingers stay hovering for split seconds before they settle, brushing and curling over Elliot's, over two fingers maximum. This shit is hard, but it feels right— his throat is just so dry and twisted he can't say anything. Hell, he's even stopped breathing.
I really, really like you is the conclusion he comes to. ]
[Elliot was waiting for his friend to finish what he was going to say. A number of ideas popped in his head- but he had no idea which one it could be. But he knew it had to be serious, if Eren was struggling so much with it. But then, instead of finishing his words, he takes Elliot's hand in what had to be the most faint and gentle of handholds. It caught Elliot by surprise- Eren really wasn't the type to casually hold hands. Handshakes and high fives were the extent of what Eren did. There wasn't a reason for Eren to hold onto his hand unless....
Unless-
Holy crap.
The confused expression on Elliot's face changes to one that looks more akin to a deer in the headlights as the right conclusion hits him like a ton of bricks. It's almost like having a series of hallucinmemories, except this time it's all the life he's led in Recolle with all those clues he overlooked- highlighted:
Eren got so flustered when he helped Elliot move in after Elliot made that cute bodyguard remark-
Eren was so happy during that night on the beach. He even risk breaking curfew to hear Elliot play one more song-
Eren drove over just to check on him after he found out about Ryoji. He let him cling to him. Eren's heart had been racing the whole time-
Eren started acting weird when he said he had a date with another guy, out of jealousy-
Eren had drove over to his place after he told him about his date and took him to a romantic spot-
None of these were things that just a friend normally did. Had Eren's source of feelings been towards anyone else, Elliot would've picked up the clues in a heartbeat. But since they were being directed towards him...
Wow. Franklin was right. He really did have a blindspot. Eren had been giving him clues all along towards his true feelings, and he had missed all of them. Eren likes him. That's the only conclusion he can come to at all this. Eren actually likes him.]
As the shock of the reveal wears off, the actual meaning starts to sink in. He shuts his eyes for a moment. His heart starts pounding fast, and his face heats up. He's pretty sure his stomach just did a few flips as well. He has a second where he wonders if this was all some sort of dream, but he can still feel Eren's hand on his, and in none of his dreams about this did he feel like this...
Did he like Eren too? Of course he did. That's a fact he's known for a long time. He smiled every time Eren texted him. His heart skipped a beat every time Eren laughed. He treasured his other friends a lot, but it was clear that Eren was on another level. He couldn't even completely condemn his aunt and uncle for trying to force him into a life he didn't want, just because without that pushing he wouldn't have met Eren.
And now Eren was returning his feelings. Even though it was a day Elliot had assumed would never come, it was here. It was reality. A reality he would have to act in.
I am not throwing away my shot.
His resolve steeled up, he opens his eyes again. He makes himself look in Eren's eyes, those beautiful eyes. He'll give him a warm smile as he moves to take Eren's hand in both of his, holding it as gently as Eren touched his hand. He's very nervous, but in a happy sort of way.]
[ H-ha, holy fuck. For more than half a minute, the shock on Elliot's face goes unnoticed— Eren can't quite look at him right, not without feeling like his face was steaming so bad you can fry an egg on his forehead. There's silence, a whole ton of it, no reaction, and Eren swears that somehow, he fucked up more than actually saying something would do. Gut, thanks for being a goddamn traitor.
Does he follow up? He has to follow up, explain this and still save the bond they had and clarify himself. I care a lot about you, but, fuck if that still doesn't sound a little strong (because Eren means every blunt of what he says), and awkward if it's unrequited. Well, this is it. He has to face it now, and at least he can go on knowing that he tried. That's how things should be.
Attention back up to Elliot, lips part and no sound comes, maybe some kind of choke, his mouth is dry and his eyes are nervous. Here it comes. Some sort of Eren, what are you doing, because, ha! Funny story! He didn't know anymore.
His hand is cupped, and he swallows so tightly that nothing seems to go down right, only lodging his heart higher into his throat. But, did he hear that right? Was that smile trying to apologize, or was it real? Those words respond to what he was going to say, and it felt like chimes so breathtaking he finally exhales that built up, tense air in his lungs.
Where was he right now? Floating? All he felt was flutters, and if it weren't for actually holding his hand, he'd be shaking. His breath is shaky. His hand is still being held, by two tenders. ]
