[ eren wasn’t waiting for the day the sky would be taken from them. a long time ago, it was his horizon line. it was his freedom, his birthright— and to wake up with a cage so massive felt so increasingly tight against him. it was suffocating to look at. it was frustrating to admit. this is for your own good, they say. it’s to keep the storm from hitting too hard.

that’s what it feels like, but there’s a part of eren that can’t help but feel betrayed. he’s been trying to understand them this whole time. he’s been trying, and supporting something that had to be true, or else what were they supposed to believe in?

it takes a few moments. eren wants to say don’t worry, we’ll be fine. everything’s going to be okay. we’ll get through it. but that lie just makes his nerves grate the same way they did when he read them off the retrospec post. it’s the same thing, every month, and the same result: little to no answers or proper communication. his patience could only go so far.

they were trapped, truly trapped, and something inside of him just couldn’t stop screaming. ]

but they won’t take our freedom.

[But they did take it, he finds himself thinking at the text he gets back. While the radio silence from the outside world had been worrying enough- the barrier around the city and the sky only solidified it- they were in a cage. A cage that Retrospec likely set up.

But he still wants to believe Eren. That they are still free somehow. That they can figure out a way out of this.]

I have to admit, I'm pretty scared right now.

[He doesn't feel like being alone right now]

[ eren had his own drastic means of moving forward, and one of them had to do with the complete denial that he’s lost. nothing of conforming, and he’d still be free— because he fought for it.

there were many reasons to feel fear though, and elliot wasn’t the only one. as much as eren was in a turbulence of emotion right now— fear was around there somewhere. ]

[ whether it was back to his place, or into town, or even checking this dome out themselves. eren needed someone right now, too. elliot, by preference. ]

[He doesn't care where he goes, as long as he gets to be with Eren. It's easier to feel brave with Eren. It's easier to feel safe. Plus, it's easier to know that Eren's alright if he's by his side. He's worried about him too.

All good reasons to see him. ]

[Eren is so good to him. He was confused at first by him spelling out 2018 like that. But oh right, Siri dictation.]

At least the wedding was great.

[He wants to stick to that beginning. ]

Should I type out weird words to see how Siri dictates them?

[He moves to start packing up a bag. He's done this enough times that it goes pretty fast. He knows what to bring, what he can get at Eren's place. ]

[ an attempt to focus on the things he was fighting for. he had so many things to live for in this life. more than he ever had in the last. if they thought he was ferocious back then, when he had so little, what was he now?

elliot’s probably the only one who knows how to tame him back. ]

[ when you’re not actually hearing him yell it might sound funny ]

[yeah it is a little funny, and he laughs some in response]

[OFF HE GOES TO PACK]

[ and, right on cue, eren’s car (and music— slipknot) pull up in front of elliot’s place with a few beeps. honestly, the conversation over helped ease some of the tension on his shoulders, but when he looks out of his window and sees the pitch-black background . . .

it unsettles. it unsettles deeply. ]

[It takes him a minute or two extra to get outside, because turns out it IS hard to pack a bag in less than 3 minutes, but he'll be coming out none the less. He makes a beeline straight for the car, opening the door and getting in. It's unsettling to be in that darkness alone alright]

H-Hey Eren. Thanks for getting me...

[ a few minutes more is not a lot when you’re lost in thought, staring into literal blackness and wondering just what time it was, because he couldn’t see the moon or the stars. it probably shouldn’t have even been dark at this hour, normally, but here they were.

it almost feels like he’s being whiplashed back into the past. he doesn’t even know who to fight.

elliot clicking the door open and shut again is what gets him to jerk back from his swarming thoughts, waiting for him to get settled in his seat before leaning over to give home a greeting kiss. he can’t seem to edge up a strong enough smile to shine through just yet, and lowers the noisy demon music. might as well be what he’s feeling. but, vroom! ]

I wouldn’t leave you. Especially when you make a difference for me.

[ his presence helped more than anything, and eren’s glad that elliot felt the same way. the steering wheel’s all sweaty. the whole thing is . . . bad. ]

[He doesn't mind the noisy demon music, but he appreciates it being turned down so he doesn't have to yell over it. It's clear on Eren's expression he's unsettled by all this too. At least they were both on the same page on that regard.]

You make a difference for me too. [...] Why do you think they did this?

[ that should have made him feel more at ease, but for some reason— it tightens his middle. don’t lose it now, he tells himself, trying to shove anything that wasn’t strong and secure in air and appearance. he was worried, and frightened, and angry, but he had to be in control either way. eren had to bring that security to him. ]

“The final stages of the big project”.

[ it’s the first thing that comes to mind, and yes— eren does read those over and over enough to quote them off by heart. ]

That, or what they said about defenses. [ but his fingers tighten around the wheel, and he speeds just a tiny bit. they’re going a different way from home. ] But how do we know if they don’t talk to us? How do we even know if this isn’t all just some— damn lie? Do they expect just a stay calm to work, like livestock?

[fiddlestick]

[Honestly, Eren trying to be in control makes him worry more than anything else. He knows Eren too well, he knows the signs. The expression on his face, the fingers tight on the wheel, the harsher language, the speeding. In other word, Eren you're not great at keeping it calm.]

Hey. [He reaches over to touch Eren's arm] We're not livestock. Okay?

[He gives a little sigh] I-If anything, they remind me of my aunt and uncle. I really do think they think they know what's best for us, but ... aren't great at actually listening...

[ eren’s sense of calm just be like. but wait, there’s actually no link? exactly. to the touch he’s tense all over, a free hand to his mouth as he sits back and lets elliot’s hand calm him, or at least attempt to. he’s glad someone can agree with him, and after giving elliot’s word some thought and time enough to sit in (and for his temper to simmer down), he finally speaks up, voice significantly lower but still holding strain. ]

—Then we have to make noise. [ at a red light and flicking on the blinker to turn, he slumps. ] I’m not going to just sit in line at the slaughterhouse again. [ and through his teeth: ] And I can’t stand seeing people do that.

[Again with the cattle analogy...]

We will, we just have to figure out what sounds to make first. [He gives him a gentle squeeze of the shoulder] It wouldn't do any good to rush in blindly.

[ he’s very, very triggered, okay. when an eren is triggered he falls back to his roots. elliot’s right about one thing, though, as much as eren wants to probably. you know, punch the dome.

briefly, he raises his fingers to brush the squeezing hand. a quick gesture as he picks up driving again, because he’s helping. a lot. eren probably would’ve sped a few more kms if he were thinking alone. ]

. . . Yeah. [ “even if i feel like it” ] The only time they actually talked to people was in August— But what’s the use, talking to us when everything’s gone to shit already?

[ maybe they can riot ]
